Promotion of gender equality and gender equity
SexSense understands gender equality as the concept that women and men, girls and boys, and other genders have equal conditions, treatment, and opportunities for realizing their full potential, human rights, and dignity, and for contributing to (and benefitting from) economic, social, cultural, and political development. On the other hand, SexSense as a network works towards the achievement of gender equity, a concept that recognizes that women and men have different needs and power, and that these differences should be identified and addressed in a manner that rectifies the imbalances between genders. This may include equal treatment or treatment that is different but considered equivalent in terms of rights, benefits, obligations, and opportunities. SexSense recognizes all genders have different needs and that imbalances need to be rectified among them all, not just two.
Prevention of gender-based violence
SexSense works towards the prevention of gender-based violence, referred to as any type of harm perpetrated against a person or group of people because of their factual or perceived sex, gender, sexual orientation, and/or gender identity. Gender-based violence is based on an imbalance of power. It is carried out to humiliate and make a person or group of people feel inferior and/or subordinate. It can be sexual, physical, verbal, psychological (emotional), or socio-economic, among others. SexSense understands gender-based violence as both violence against women (usually used interchangeably) and violence against all genders.
Awareness raising on sexual and reproductive health and rights
SexSense raises awareness on sexual and reproductive health, understood as a healthy reproductive system and healthy pregnancy through access to healthcare, medication, and education, and on sexual and reproductive rights, which include the right to decide if and when to have children, including freedom from discrimination, coercion, and violence when making family planning choices. It also includes the right to access information and services needed to support these choices and optimize health.
Promotion of sexual and psychological well-being
SexSense promotes well-being from a comprehensive and rights-based point of view. It understands sexual and psychological well-being as two aspects that go hand in hand. Sexual well-being entails a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual and romantic relationships, the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination, and violence. Besides a social dimension, sexual well-being also has a mental and emotional dimension and is therefore strictly connected to psychological well-being. Psychological well-being is a vital concern, fundamental for people to live and interact with each other.
Promotion of healthy relationships
SexSense promotes relationships that are communicative, respectful, trusting, and characterized by honesty and equality between/among partners, where boundaries are set, and consent is practiced.
Promotion of EU funding opportunities
SexSense acts as a platform for sharing, exchanging, and learning about different EU funding opportunities in the various fields covered by CSE, which might include but are not limited to CERV - Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme, Erasmus +, EuropeAid, and Horizon, among others.
